In March 2006, the Japan national team, led by manager Sadaharu Oh, was in a fierce battle with the world's powerhouses in the first World Baseball Classic. Around the same time, Atsushi Shikata, a member of the Hokkaido Police Headquarters Criminal Investigation Department's First Investigative Division, reunites with former baseball buddy Satoru Kawabata for the first time in 29 years at a ramen shop in Susukino. Kawabata, who lives in Kawasaki, came to Hokkaido to raise money. Two days later, Satoru Kawabata's stabbed corpse was found in the coastal area on the outskirts of Otaru. The day before his death, Satoru left a phone call with his daughter saying, "I met some familiar people." Shikata realizes that the person who surfaced as a suspect is also an old friend.
